IKEA’s own Four Rooms

IKEA's own Four Rooms of Change

For decades, IKEA has been working with the Four Rooms of Change around the world. The furniture giant even has its own Four Rooms.

The 4-room apartment at IKEA

In 1999, IKEA signed a corporate agreement to use the Four Rooms of Change throughout the entire group and worldwide. Two special editions were developed: one in Swedish and one in English. The Four Rooms of Change are now used throughout the IKEA Group with incredibly successful results.

Tomas Oxelman was responsible for implementing the program at IKEA. Together with Claes Janssen, he developed IKEA-specific material, which was first published in 1999.

The following is an excerpt from a letter Tomas wrote to Claes Janssen in March 2008, ten years later (published with permission from Tomas Oxelman):

The Four Rooms model is a huge hit at IKEA, and no other model has come close to achieving that level of reach. I’m actually a bit surprised myself at how a model can have such an impact. To be honest, we work with a somewhat stripped-down version, as you know, and many people have a limited understanding of it. But perhaps that’s what’s made it so popular. Everyone can grasp the basics pretty quickly, and that’s essential these days if we want to get so many people on board. Most recently, it debuted in Japan. Lasse, who works there as a retail manager, has made the Four Rooms a “must-know model” for all managers. And it works!
